AI agents in construction: what they can actually do today

An AI agent is a digital assistant that finishes a task from start to end, using the systems you already have. It reads the email, checks the numbers, drafts the document, and asks a person before anything important goes out.
That last part matters. The useful agents in construction today are not autonomous robots running your business. They are tireless project accountants, clerks, and coordinators that do the retyping, matching, and chasing, then hand a person a finished draft to approve.
Why agents, and why now
Two things changed. First, AI models got good enough to read messy real-world documents: scanned lien waivers, photographed T&M tickets, 400-page specs, and WhatsApp and iMessage voice notes. Second, the systems contractors run on, including Procore, QuickBooks, Sage, and email, all have APIs that an agent can read and write.
Procore made this mainstream in 2026 with its own library of agents that work inside Procore. That is a good sign for the industry. It also leaves a gap: most construction work crosses several systems, and many contractors are not on Procore at all.
What agents can do today
These are practical examples, grouped by the part of the business they help. Each one has the same shape: the agent does the work, and a named person approves anything that spends money, sends a document, or changes a record.
Money and accounting. A pay application agent drafts the AIA G702/G703 from the schedule of values and approved change orders. A change order agent spots extra work agreed in emails and WhatsApp, iMessage, or SMS threads and drafts the change order. An invoice matching agent checks each sub invoice against the contract, prior billing, and the lien waiver on file.
The field. A daily log agent turns crew voice notes and photos into a complete daily log. A safety camera agent watches site video for missing PPE and people in exclusion zones and alerts the superintendent in seconds.
Paperwork. A lien waiver and COI agent requests missing documents from subs, checks what comes back, and holds payment until the file is complete.
Owners. An ask-your-business agent answers questions like “Which jobs are over budget?” from live data, with sources.
What agents should not do
Agents should not sign contracts, release payments, or change records of truth on their own. They should not guess when they are unsure. Good agent design sets clear approval points, logs every action, and sends low-confidence items to a person. Trust is earned the way it is with a new hire: small tasks first, clear rules, and a manager who signs off.
How to start
Pick one workflow that is repetitive, measurable, and annoying: pay applications, lien waivers, daily logs, or change orders are common first choices. Run a fixed-price pilot on one live job for two to four weeks. Measure hours saved and errors caught. If it pays off, put it into production and pick the next one.
